Wisdom of the Body

a Hakomi Approach to Healing Trauma ONLINE

with Vicky Gaughan and Gabriela Valdés Villarreal

Our way of responding to life events is stored in our nervous system; our bodies. These responses were useful adaptations when we lived the trauma events, however, they have become habitual and therefore limit our life energy.

Because the nervous system responds automatically in our known and habitual ways, in the Wisdom of the Body (WOB), we practice with conscious intention to do something different.

In WOB we offer exercises to strengthen new neural pathways. The trainings are in two phases that incorporate instruction for somatic exercises, plus practice, and involve underpinning theory. The +Wiring practice phase assists in rooting the new information and experience. We follow this pattern in each of our sessions.

On a neurophysiological level, each time we practice having a beneficial experience, were pulling engagement away from our brains trauma response centre and bringing engagement to other areas of our brain, specifically to our prefrontal cortex, where we can integrate the new experience and neuroplastic change occurs

And Still I Rise

This session focuses on the systemic dimension of trauma. We have been conditioned to think about trauma as an individual tragedy instead of events that are interconnected to larger systems of domination that shape our world. We also contemplate the notion of transformation through turmoil.

"Post traumatic growth means you’ve been broken – but you’ve put yourself back together"

– Sharon Begley

Owning your Power

Connect with our innate personal power and experience strength in our bodies.

One of the effects of trauma is the feeling of being caught in situations we find difficult to overcome. One of the missing experiences we may have had, is that of power and strength, to enable us to respond adequately to life situations.

In this training, we will explore connecting with our innate personal power.

Practice listening to your intuition, your inner voice; ask questions; be curious; see what you see; hear what you hear; and then act upon what you know to be true. These intuitive powers were given to your soul at birth. - Clarissa Pinkola Estés

Death and grief

The gifts of grief. The healing power of tears.

The central question for this exploration is: How do we navigate endings and the inevitable feelings of loss that arise? This is fertile, if not trepidatious territory. So, let's find some companions in this training who can accompany us as we uncover how we stand in relation to death, dying, and grief.

“Is death your friend or your enemy? That my dear depends on you"- Pema Chodron

Resourcing ourselves

Knowing and practicing what gives us wellbeing and makes us strong.

In this training, we focus on:

  • Understanding our natural need for self-reflection and solitude.

  • Exploring self care practices as a way to nurture and build resilience.

  • Practicing radical self-acceptance, which may or may not be against our socialised way of being in the world .

Belonging & Gratitude

last session of this series

We are designed to be in connection with others, we will celebrate and wire the connection we nourished in this training series.

…it’s one of those kind of things that runs silently in the background, underneath the conversations were having in the open... will I be liked? Will I be loved? Do I belong here? Is it ok for me to be here? It’s like this constant refrain that’s happening for so many people unconsciously - Toko-pa Turner

In touch with the Earth

We want to explore the missing experience of being held and nourished – The first of the Five fundamental movements by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.

Land to our people, it is everything: identity, the connection to our ancestors, the home of our nonhuman kinfolk, our pharmacy, our library, the source of all that sustains us - Sacred ground.― Robin Wall Kimmerer

Trauma Basic

An introduction to trauma, how it shows up in our lives and how it can be healed.

Trauma affects our body, mind, and spirit. Our nervous system influences how we perceive and respond to situations in daily life. If not attended to, unprocessed trauma can chronically affect the whole of us. With advances in the understanding of trauma, healing is possible. In this training, we want to focus on three questions:

The ability to offer the safe sanctuary of presence is central to treating trauma - Bonnie Badenoch

Trauma Deeper

We explore the different states of our nervous system when trauma is present. In this training we weave into the session an essential understanding alongside allied practices, for trauma healing.

Self compassion

Essential practices to connect with ourselves with compassion.

We hear such harsh inner voices from the people we work with as therapists, but perhaps you find you also have similar tough, internal voices. This self-talk usually has a theme of unworthiness. Learning how to speak to ourselves kindly and with self-compassion is essential.
